anybody seen The Teahouse of the August Moon?

Yes. It is a gentle comedy about a United States officer during the post-WWII occupation of Japan who "goes native" -- instead of building a school, he builds a teahouse. It is dated -- today it would be considered inappropriate for a Caucasian actor (Marlon Brando) to play a Japanese character or for the stereotyped portrayal of the Japanese people. But for its time it was quite forward-thinking and culturally sensitive. You have to remember that it was made just after the war, when the Japanese were the enemy. By that standard, its depiction of the Japanese people is quite open and unbiased.
