Why are Saint Lawrence's Hand Portrayed in this Way....?
I am trying to understand more about this masterpiece.

I understand the halo, flames, purple robe....but why are his hands positioned in that way? At first I thought perhaps he was praying but his eyes aren't closed and his hands aren't fully clasped.
It looks like he's holding his hands out in a gesture of supplication/submission. That's kind of a standard way of depicting hands in medieval art...it looks similar to figures in illuminated manuscripts and other stained glass windows.
