Defining Your Style With Vans Footwear Explained In Basic

As one of the world’s most well-known designers of edgy apparel, shoes, clothing and accessories, the Vans logo is instantly recognisable. You’ll spot it at many of their chain stores around the world, on their distinctly unique products and online at several stores.

But before you decide on which pair of Vans are perfect for you, you might be interested to know more about the brand’s origins and how the company catapulted to success. Back in the swinging sixties, two brothers, Paul and James van Doren, along with three other partners, opened up their first store in Anaheim, California, called the Van Doren Rubber Company. It marked an exciting new development in the industry, in that it created shoes and sold them directly to the public. Vans deck shoes – known today as the Authentic range – flew off the shelves. It was quite clear that the footwear would make an impression from the word “go”. 

The 1970s saw the company making further headway, as they went on to produce wool-lined canvas and rubber mukluks for the US Air Force and Department of Defense. This impacted the very essence of the shoes, which have continued to retain their rugged look. It was this exact style that also appealed to skateboarders later on. The ‘Era’ Vans in particular became one of the most coveted shoes among the skateboarding fraternity. It featured interesting colour combinations, a padded collar, and a non-slip bottom that gave it grip. From there the craze took off and Vans opened stores first nationally in the US, then on a worldwide scale. 

The 1980s saw the footwear starting to make shoes for various sports including wakeboarding, skateboarding, surfing and motor cross. The brand received even greater attention when Sean Penn wore a pair of Vans slip-ons in the 1982 film Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The shoes quickly developed into a legendary brand, wanted and worn by diverse individuals all over the world. The company does well to constantly find new and exciting ways to satisfy their followers. In 2004 they launched Vans Customs on their website, which allowed customers to design Their Own pair of Van slip-ons, mid-cuts or high-tops. This not only offered people a creative outlet but also gave them the opportunity to create their dream shoes! 

Like it did when it was first conceptualised and created back in the sixties, today Vans represent authenticity and someone who is adventurous, daring and sporty.
