LPs Lead The Way To A Renaissance Of Rediscovered Vinyl Recordings

When CDs arrived onto the market, everyone seemed to think that vinyl LPs’ day was over and they would be relegated to attics, basements and landfills. CDs are everywhere, and turntables seemed to be vanishing, so what’s with the new push toward those grooved discs of days gone by?

While MP3 files threaten to dominate CDs, there was a time when CDs came along and pushed away LPs and drove cassettes into extinction. Forgetting all of the hype over new formats replacing the old, it seems that vinyl recordings have become the fastest growing format on the market.

So if you’re pondering how this all came about, you’re not alone, because a lot of people assumed that once these modern formats became common, they owned the market. Vinyl’s downward trajectory seemed inevitable, until a growing number of music fans decided that there was something worth reviving in those large-format discs with the large-sized cover art.

Those who appreciate alternative music genres tended to be the most steadfast proponents of vinyl rediscovery that has provided new life to LPs. You may prefer your Bob Dylan vinyl over the same disc presented in other formats for reasons of your own, or because you possess a turntable but no CD player.

For the serious record collector, vinyl is said to have richer, more natural sound than does the best reproduction on CDs or other digital media. While no one would dispute that CDs are a vast improvement in sound quality over cassette tapes, which were mostly used in car stereos, LPs command more respect.

A big selling point of CDs is the fact that they offer noise-free playback, unlike other tecnologies that came before them. Vinyl platters are noisy compared with CDs, which maintain an icy silence between cuts and never produce surface noise from dust or scratches.

Those who collect antique recordings expect there to be a fair amount of noise that comes along with an old-time disc that has been well-played over the years. In a strange way, collectors of some roots music LPs are reassured by a certain amount of surface noise that tends to reinforce the record’s authenticity.

Regardless of whether you’re an admirer of vintage Bessie Smith or White Stripes vinyl, you’re likely to hear recordings anew when you experience them on LPs. When disc jockeys spin LP-sized singles as they spin discs, it’s because they can grip them more easily than the smaller-sized CDs.

You’ll discover lots of vintage recordings that never made it onto CD when you search through vinyl LPs, which is reason enough for collectors to remain with vinyl.
