A Trip Down Memory Lane
The evolution of toys over the last hundred years is truly staggering. We have all but said goodbye to the traditional, individually handmade toys and now embraced mass-produced electrical toys that have lights and sounds and eat batteries like grains of rice. Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic old toys and why they were loved so much
Rag dolls. There is nothing more simple than a rag doll. Once upon a time every little girl had a rag doll and they would go everywhere the child went. The most useful feature was that you could wash them in some warm soapy water (providing your child would let you) and then they would be looking new again the next day when they had dried. Nowadays kids prefere babies with electrically moving parts and voices. You’re not meant to wash them in the same way but I urge you to try.
Wooden bikes. Bikes these days are pretty much all made out of metal or plastic as these are generally the cheapest options for production. You cannot beat however a hand-crafted bike made out of high quality hardwood. They didn't break down anywhere near as much as modern bikes do and the aging wooden looked beautiful.On top of this, having an old wooden bike a room added a lot of character to it and people even bought them just for their aesthetic value
Rocking horses. Much like the wooden bike, a rocking horse made from fine wood not only looked stunning in any home but also lasted a lifetime due to its simple yet effective design. The best feature about buying one of these though is that your child can still have the horsey they always wanted but without the expensive and effort of a real one. Rocking horse makers are hard to find these days but if you can find a good one then its well worth purchasing one.
