How would I achieve the camera shot from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship?
In the Shortcut to Mushrooms chapter of the movie, when the Hobbits are on the road, there is a camera shot where the background appears to get closer but the foreground stays the same. I have seen this trick in other movies too and want to learn how to do it. I know it involves zoom somehow, but any further information would be much appreciated.
You're half right. It does involve "pulling" focus but it happens along with a "dolly" move. This means the camera moves closer or further from the subject while simultaneously changing the focus. You'll need a way to hold the camera steady on wheels so it moves smoothly. For a similar effect "on the cheap" use a tripod with the front leg raised up. By leaning back and stepping forward (or the reverse) you can achieve a smooth looking dolly-in/out. This technique is demonstrated on a great site: Instructables.com. While performing this move you change focus.
