how do I convert old vhs movies to dvds?

Can i use my dvd/vcr player to convert old vhs movies to dvds?

You need a special unit with a DVD recorder. I have one from Toshiba that has a VCR and a DVD recorder in the same unit.

A regular DVD player is just that - a player. It can play movies, but not record to DVD.

If you have a VCR/DVD recorder combo, you can transfer VHS movies straight to DVD in the same device, provided that the VHS doesn't have copyright protection. You might not be able to dub newer store-bought VHS tapes.

There might be a bit of a learning curve as you start to put your old VHS movies on DVD. But once you get the basics down, and learn how much material can be recorded on DVDs, at various speeds, it's worth doing.

Eventually your old VHS tapes will wear out. Even VHS tapes that are 10 years old could start showing signs of wear. It's best to get them on DVD, which are digital and could last 100 years.

But don't destroy your old tapes, since you never Know What Could Happen. If they're important to you, like old home movies, keep the VHS tapes in a separate location and use the DVDs for regular viewing.
