Until You’ve Heard It On Vinyl, You Aren’t Getting The Full Experience
LPs on vinyl have been with us even when CDs threatened to sweep them away, but renewed interest in vinyl promises to again bring them to the forefront. For a while, it seemed that the smaller silver discs had won the format war, much as the VHS tape once did away with the Sony BetaMax, or LP records buried 78s.
What a long way we have come since those days when CDs first appeared in record stores and seemed to dominate, before MP3 files hit the market. While everyone was looking toward the new technological formats to lead the way, vinyl is the format that is seen as the fastest growing format.
Many were surprised by the renewed interest in vinyl, because it was assumed that once replaced by more modern alternatives, vinyl was never to be seen again. The unpredictable element in this game is the customers themselves, who can be hard to figure at times, and who were apt to experiment with alternatives to all things mainstream.
Similar to cassette tapes, the once popular format that also seemed to disappear with the CD’s introduction, vinyl has won favor with the alternative music audience. You may favor your Bob Dylan vinyl over the same disc presented in other formats for reasons of your own, or because you own a turntable but no CD player.
Vinyl fans say That Old fashioned LPs and singles sound a good deal warmer than do their counterparts in the digital format area of sound recordings. While no one would dispute that CDs are a vast improvement in sound quality over cassette tapes, which were mostly used in car stereos, LPs command more respect.
CDs delighted music fans when they came out, because they could hold lots of music and produced no surface noise when played. The same is not true for LPs, which can be substantially noisy depending on their age and condition, and may deliver hisses and pops along with the music.
Considered a nuisance by some, a certain amount of background noise is actually welcome with collectors of various genres of vintage music such as blues or folk. Without the background scratches, vintage record collectors proclaim, the LP lacks a certain amount of character and sounds bland, as do recordings in digital formats.
Regardless of whether you’re an admirer of vintage Bessie Smith or White Stripes vinyl, you’re likely to hear recordings anew when you experience them on LPs. When disc jockeys spin LP-sized singles as they spin discs, it’s because they can hold them more easily than the smaller-sized CDs.
Whatever your motivation for seeking out vinyl recordings might be, you’ll find copious numbers of recordings new and old, some never on CD, on vinyl LPs.
