Why are vhs tapes sound more clear than dvds or bluray dvds sound?

Seriously! i jus got my old video player out now, and connected it to my HD tele. Usually on dvds or blu ray dvds when im watching them i need to keep putting the volume up and down. Sometimes the dialogue is not clear, especially when there`s alot of speacial effects like the movie Transformers etc..... Just testing Raiders Of The Lost Ark and i can hear every word spoken unlike dvds.
No your wrong Morgana. The settings are correct. I put the sound to movie. Its a sony kdl 5500. got the tele in Sainsbury at christmas. I also have speakers.

The problem is That Vhs was recorded in stereo, with your TV's crummy speakers in mind.

DVDs are recorded at a lot lower sound levels, to better represent the different sound channels (speakers) used for surround sound. Most players can't convert 5.1 back into 2.1, so you're literally only getting the left front and right front channels (speakers) which mainly do the music and sound effects for the front. Dialog is mainly done by the front center speaker - which your TV lacks.

Trust me, if you plugged your DVD player and your VHS deck into your surround system, the DVD is going to sound A LOT better than anything you could ever get off of VHS.

You can try poking around in your DVD player's setup menu and see if you can force it to only output in stereo. This should help equalize the sound levels within the movie a bit.

But honestly, with simple surround systems running around 100 quid, it's just silly NOT to have 5.1 for your movies. All you really need on a system is 5 speakers, a subwoofer, and an optical audio input. The more inputs, the better.
