I'm Still Here Critiques Walk The Line Among Tragedy And Farce
In 2008, Phoenix declared he was leaving behind his acting career, to the consternation of his fans. It was his intention to start a career as a rapper, and he was lampooned thoroughly for a severely off kilter appearance on David Letterman's show. Since then, people have been waiting the release of the documentary "I'm Still Here," which chronicles his brand new life and try to become successful in that field. The film is beginning to hit theaters, and also the "I'm Still Here" reviews are beginning to pour in.
Live after death of movie profession
The buzz about the release of the film is it is an update on Joaquin Phoenix. The infamous Joaquin Phoenix Letterman appearance was, for many, the last reference point individuals had for him. He seemed to be coming unglued at that point. Most of the "I'm Still Here" critiques discuss in detail the state he is in. A talented individual who has gone entirely off the Deep End appears to be the allure of the film. That is lots of the Roger Ebert critique in the Chicago Sun Times. Ebert does not have a lot to say about anything else in the movie. Ebert also maintained the unhinged Phoenix is the film's selling point.
This is Spinal Rap
All music documentaries are compared, officially and unofficially, to "This is Spinal Tap," a "documentary" about a fictional band by Rob Reiner. However, there is no comparing "I'm Still Here" review to "This is Spinal Tap" on Rotten Tomatoes. An institution of film for the last 20 years, "Spinal Tap" has a 96 percent Fresh rating. The reviews for "I'm Still Here" are not as good. It has a rating just over 50 percent. The drug fueled, ridiculous antics of Phoenix and lousy production by Casey Affleck are the common threads in most of the critiques for "I'm Still Here". Joaquin Phoenix's sister, Summer, happens to be married to Casey Affleck, who's Ben Affleck's younger brother.
No direction whatsoever
This film cannot be about a pre-eminent rapper about for making it big, because he has not; however rather it is about a talented individual who left a successful career behind and is about to implode. Since the advent of reality TV, documentary features about individuals heading for disaster are in vogue in this age of Schadenfreude. Bear something else in mind, though. Many of the reviews also bring up River Phoenix, older brother of Phoenix, who perished from a drug overdose. Joaquin Phoenix might be headed in that direction.
